The Role of Laparoscopy in Women's Health
The invention (and refinement) of the laparoscope has transformed women’s health. Laparoscopy offers a diagnostic and treatment path that can dramatically improve gynecology services.
At V Care OB/GYN in New York City, Gabriela Olaru, MD, and our team spend considerable time and effort researching the latest advancements in women’s health technology.
The devices we use for laparoscopy services represent some of the best technology currently available within women’s health. More importantly, our providers have the training and experience to make the most of this technology.
Let’s look at how laparoscopy can help you stay healthy as you move through the phases of life.
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive path to your pelvic organs
Put simply, laparoscopy is a technique that allows us to visually access and assess your reproductive and other pelvic organs.
A laparoscope is a thin rod equipped with a light and a camera. It works as a small telescope to gather magnified, real-time imaging of your internal tissues, which it then displays on an external screen.
It only requires an incision less than a half-inch long to allow access into your pelvic region. During the procedure, your provider looks for signs of disease or damage.
Laparoscopy is a powerful diagnostic tool. It helps practitioners determine the source of symptoms without more invasive procedures. It’s often combined with digital imaging, blood testing, and other diagnostic tools.
If we identify a gynecologic condition that requires intervention, we can insert slim surgical tools through one or more other small incisions in your abdomen to make the necessary tissue alterations.
What conditions can benefit from laparoscopy?
Laparoscopy is a versatile diagnostic and treatment tool that can address and improve many gynecologic issues, including:
- Tubal ligation
- Ovarian cysts
- Uterine fibroids
- Endometriosis
- Pelvic adhesion
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Infertility
- Hysterectomy
- Incontinence
- Pelvic organ prolapse
These are just some of the gynecologic issues that laparoscopy can diagnose and treat.
Laparoscopy can dramatically improve your recovery experience
The primary benefit of laparoscopy is the ability to make necessary alterations while minimizing tissue displacement. That’s a significant advantage over open surgical procedures, which require large incisions to gain access to the treatment area.
Smaller incisions mean less scarring and a faster recovery. You’re back on your feet and into the swing of your routine much more quickly. There’s also a reduced risk of internal bleeding because this technique impacts less internal tissue.
Laparoscopic procedures also carry a lower risk of infection than open surgery; larger incisions require more extensive monitoring.
Laparoscopy isn’t always the best approach, and there are circumstances when open surgery is the best path forward. But when possible, laparoscopy is often the preferred option for patients and surgeons.
